A wryly funny and surprisingly moving account of an extraordinary life lived almost entirely in the public eye
A teen idol at fifteen, an international icon and founder of the Brat Pack at twenty, and one of Hollywood's top stars to this day, Rob Lowe chronicles his experiences as a painfully misunderstood child actor in Ohio uprooted to the wild counterculture of mid-seventies Malibu, where he embarked on his unrelenting pursuit of a career in Hollywood.
The Outsiders placed Lowe at the birth of the modern youth movement in the entertainment industry. During his time on The West Wing, he witnessed the surreal nexus of show business and politics both on the set and in the actual White House. And in between are deft and humorous stories of the wild excesses that marked the eighties, leading to his quest for family and sobriety.
Never mean-spirited or salacious, Lowe delivers unexpected glimpses into his successes, disappointments, relationships, and one-of-a-kind encounters with people who shaped our world over the last twenty-five years. Rob Lowe's New York Times bestselling autobiography, Stories I Only Tell My Friends, shares tales that are as entertaining as they are unforgettable.
I have always liked Rob Lowe is an actor but I cannot say I am a huge fan. I can say after reading this book that he has lived a very amazing life with many interesting encounters of his at a young age which developed into long-term friendships with some of Hollywood’s elite. This book is very well written, Rob is intelligent, articulate and possibly one of the most self-aware people on the planet. This book does not read like your typical biography, Instead it is like sitting down with Rob over several dinners and drinks and simply having a very interesting and well thought out conversation. I look forward to reading his other books.55
I really wasn't a Rob Lowe fan when I started this book. It is very well written and, as some folks noted in the reviews, a bit of a story of his success with some bragging. However, as an outsider, I felt his "bragging" was balanced with his faults and weaknesses. Let's face it, who knew he had interactions with so many celebrities throughout his entire life? Certainly not me. I'd seen St Elmo's Fire and Tommy Boy, but not because of Rob Lowe. I will go back and watch Hotel New Hampshire… Just because he was proud of it. Not sure how much of this is his true writing (versus that of a ghost writer/strong editor), but it is a very well-written book.45
Some jaw dropping storytelling. Honest and real and inspiring. His successful journey in love and life is well-deserved. I'm a new fan!55
I was so intrigued by the Audible audiobook that I immediately downloaded the ibook, so I could continue to read at home in bed between my commutes to and from work. I wish there was a way to rate the two halves of the book separately; I'd give Rob's childhood in Dayton four stars (riveting and astonishing; such determination on the part of a scrappy little kid is rarely seen), and his adulthood (which he tended to rush through, glossing over or just outright eliminating the more seedy, controversial episodes), which deserves only two. I'm splitting the difference and giving the entire book three stars, which seems simultaneously overly stingy and maybe overly generous.35
I've been a fan since he started his career and was struck by his honesty with regard to his struggles and successes. I would have liked to know more about his relationship with Melissa Gilbert but I assume that he was being respectful. Rob Lowe is a warm and intelligent class act!45
A hearty thank you to Rob Lowe for writing this book and sharing so much! Will immediately now begin to buy and read his next book venture, "Love Life", because I enjoyed this one THAT much!55
Personally I usually hate reading but I love reading autobiographies and learning more about people. Great insight into his life. And it's crazy all the other celebrities he worked with even as a young star. Great read and I'd recommend it to anyone.55
I truly feel this is one of the best books I have ever read! It is so good I read it in less than a week. I have never read any book that quickly. I am looking forward to Rob's next book!!55
So well written funny and interesting55
