In the New York Times bestseller that the Washington Post called “Lean In for misfits,” Sophia Amoruso shares how she went from dumpster diving to founding one of the fastest-growing retailers in the world.
Amoruso spent her teens hitchhiking, committing petty theft, and scrounging in dumpsters for leftover bagels. By age twenty-two she had dropped out of school, and was broke, directionless, and checking IDs in the lobby of an art school—a job she’d taken for the health insurance. It was in that lobby that Sophia decided to start selling vintage clothes on eBay.
Flash forward to today, and she’s the founder of Nasty Gal and the founder and CEO of Girlboss. Sophia was never a typical CEO, or a typical anything, and she’s written #GIRLBOSS for other girls like her: outsiders (and insiders) seeking a unique path to success, even when that path is windy as all hell and lined with naysayers.
#GIRLBOSS proves that being successful isn’t about where you went to college or how popular you were in high school. It’s about trusting your instincts and following your gut; knowing which rules to follow and which to break; when to button up and when to let your freak flag fly.
“A witty and cleverly told account . . . It’s this kind of honest advice, plus the humorous ups and downs of her rise in online retail, that make the book so appealing.” —Los Angeles Times
“Amoruso teaches the innovative and entrepreneurial among us to play to our strengths, learn from our mistakes, and know when to break a few of the traditional rules.” —Vanity Fair
“#GIRLBOSS is more than a book . . . #GIRLBOSS is a movement.” —Lena Dunham
I absolutely LOVE this book, I read it at least twice a year as a reminder. Girl Boss is an inspiration for all women regardless of your career goals. Sophia reassures us all that anyone can make their dreams come true as long as you believe in them and work towards them.55
If he says he needs you in his life, don’t respond that he’s needy!! Men need women and women need men, period.55
I thought this was more of a self-help learning tips on how to run a successful business type of book. It’s more of an autobiography.15
Good book for some motivation, easy to read and has good tips for entrepreneur women!45
This book is ridiculous the author is so full of her self not inspiring at all had high hopes for this book very disappointing. And to top it off he author herself is a terrible person in real life and is currently trying to sue every other company that has trademarked the name girl boss. And she’s getting away with it by making people rebrand or pay $50,000-100,000 to go to court for a name that they have already trademarked. In her book she is all about inspiring women and girl power... what a bunch of bull she is just a giant bully in real life. Don’t go through the trouble and don’t waste your money on this book!15
I really enjoyed this book. Great insight on being a true boss. Highly recommend this to a #girlboss.55
Loved reading this book. It's real, well written, funny and made me excited to be a #GIRLBOSS. If you have a vision for your career jump on in. If you have love and passion for what you do then skies the limit.55
This read has encouraged me to strive for great things despite of anxiety or people not seeing the vision I have for myself. Learn from your mistakes and take on the world like a true #Girlboss55
I was so inspired after reading #GirlBoss I was instantly implementing changes in myself as well as my business. Something that I had done with instant results was how I wrote my craigslist ads for employees. Before I would do it the standard bullet point way but after a few tips from #GirlBoss I created an ad that allowed the reader to know what kind of culture they would be applying for and make them want it. It made hiring so much easier and brought out some creative people! Huge fan of this book and I have been recommending it to all my fellow #GirlBosses55
Ridiculously relatable and makes you feel magical for being a woman! 💅🏾55
