The Plant Paradox

The Plant Paradox Summary

From renowned cardiac surgeon Steven R. Gundry, MD, the New York Times bestselling The Plant Paradox is a revolutionary look at the hidden compounds in "healthy" foods like fruit, vegetables, and whole grains that are causing us to gain weight and develop chronic disease.

Most of us have heard of gluten—a protein found in wheat that causes widespread inflammation in the body. Americans spend billions of dollars on gluten-free diets in an effort to protect their health. But what if we’ve been missing the root of the problem? In The Plant Paradox, renowned cardiologist Dr. Steven Gundry reveals that gluten is just one variety of a common, and highly toxic, plant-based protein called lectin. Lectins are found not only in grains like wheat but also in the “gluten-free” foods most of us commonly regard as healthy, including many fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans, and conventional dairy products. These proteins, which are found in the seeds, grains, skins, rinds, and leaves of plants, are designed by nature to protect them from predators (including humans). Once ingested, they incite a kind of chemical warfare in our bodies, causing inflammatory reactions that can lead to weight gain and serious health conditions.

At his waitlist-only clinics in California, Dr. Gundry has successfully treated tens of thousands of patients suffering from autoimmune disorders, diabetes, leaky gut syndrome, heart disease, and neurodegenerative diseases with a protocol that detoxes the cells, repairs the gut, and nourishes the body. Now, in The Plant Paradox, he shares this clinically proven program with readers around the world.

The simple (and daunting) fact is, lectins are everywhere. Thankfully, Dr. Gundry offers simple hacks we easily can employ to avoid them, including:
Peel your veggies. Most of the lectins are contained in the skin and seeds of plants; simply peeling and de-seeding vegetables (like tomatoes and peppers) reduces their lectin content.Shop for fruit in season. Fruit contain fewer lectins when ripe, so eating apples, berries, and other lectin-containing fruits at the peak of ripeness helps minimize your lectin consumption.Swap your brown rice for white. Whole grains and seeds with hard outer coatings are designed by nature to cause digestive distress—and are full of lectins.
With a full list of lectin-containing foods and simple substitutes for each, a step-by-step detox and eating plan, and delicious lectin-free recipes, The Plant Paradox illuminates the hidden dangers lurking in your salad bowl—and shows you how to eat whole foods in a whole new way.

Book Reviews

Eye Opening!5 star

I am already a customer of Dr. Gundry’s Bio Complete 3 Pre/Probiotics and Energy Renew drink powder, so I guess you can say that I am already “drinking approved Kool-aid”. But this book…It is easy to follow, and the stories are amazing. I am still in awe! Most of all, Dr. Gundry breaks down the science for us non-scientists. Highly recommend this book!!! Even if you don’t follow The Plant Paradox meal plans, you will learn so much about your body, our agricultural system, and, at the very least, learn how your gut is at the heart of your health.55

Excellent information thank you5 star

Love what he revealed55

Life Changing5 star

The depth of information about lectins and the down to earth way Dr. Gundry explains why there are lectins, why they do what they do and how to avoid them make it a quick first read. Then you will find yourself referring back to certain sections - especially the “Yes” and “No” lists. Life changing book.55

Life changing for better health4 star

Can’t say enough about the health benefits of this book and how easy the recipes are. But, as a Native American I have to point out we are not desecendents from China. There have been several studies suggesting such but they are always successfully refuted.45

This book does not recommend meat!!!5 star

This is a comprehensive scientific explanation about how lectins cause health problems, weight gain and a host of diseases. This book does not recommend meat in fact there is a clear explanation about why red meat should be avoided and all animal protein should be limited including fish. I found this book to be shockingly eye opening and started immediately putting the diet into practice. Gone are my aching joints, brain fog, low energy and constant bloat!!!!! Yes I have slip ups at time but overall I feel 15 years younger and look better as well!55

Fascinating read5 star

I should have read this years ago. Makes sense!55

Cardiologist recommending meat?1 star

I haven’t even purchased this book and probably won’t. I’m confused as to why a cardiologist is recommending you eat meat which is high in cholesterol and probably just as bad for you as lechtin. And according to Dr. Sebi broccoli and cauliflower are both man made foods and shouldn’t be consumed as well.15

Solid book on diet & nutrition5 star

Basically a compilation of the latest and greatest diet and nutrition research. Don’t be a sucker and fall for the typical ‘Standard American Diet’ aka SAD! Here is the gist of the book... eat organic high quality protein, fat, and vegetables. Avoid sugar. Stay away from lectins - these are plants natural defense system. They’ll cause inflammation and make you FAT! Recommended.55
