How to Survive the End of the World as We Know It

How to Survive the End of the World as We Know It Summary

Read James Wesley, Rawles's posts on the Penguin Blog
In the vein of Sam Sheridan's The Disaster Diaries, a comprehensive guide to preparing for the apocalypse!

With the recent economic crisis, formerly unimaginable scenarios have become terrifyingly real possibilities- learn how to prepare for the worst

Global financial collapse, a terrorist attack, a natural catastrophe-all it takes is one event to disrupt our way of life. We could find ourselves facing myriad serious problems from massive unemployment to a food shortage to an infrastructure failure that cuts off our power or water supply. If something terrible happens, we won't be able to rely on the government or our communities. We'll have to take care of ourselves.

In How to Survive the End of the World as We Know It, James Rawles, founder of, clearly explains everything you need to know to protect yourself and your family in the event of a disaster-from radical currency devaluation to a nuclear threat to a hurricane. Rawles shares essential tactics and techniques for surviving completely on your own, including how much food is enough, how to filter rainwater, how to protect your money, which seeds to buy for your garden, why goats are a smart choice for livestock, and how to secure your home. It's the ultimate guide to total preparedness and self-reliance in a time of need.

Book Reviews

A little weird...4 star

An incredible amount of insight and information, truly an authority on the subject. Just a little heavy on the bible thumping.45

Good read - I recommend4 star

Very well organized and easy to read. I really liked the multiple references to expound on related subjects and reputable sites to purchase items from. Put the multiple facets of survival into a logical and yet entertaining perspective. Only rated with 4 stars because I believe he should have developed most chapters a bit more but still liked the book. - bwmeeks45

It's Hard Not to Be Paranoid when Everyone Is out to Get You4 star

So, the real question for me is the likelihood of the disaster scenario. One response is that if nothing happens at least no harm will come from being prepared. Is that really true? Focusing on possible disaster can be an unhealthy mental state...or even a way of avoiding other issues. I don't know. Obviously each person's individual choice. Following this book's advice is an investment of time, energy, and money that will not be able to be used towards other worthwhile goals. That just isn't discussed in this book. The author has made a pre-disaster career out of helping us prepare for a disaster that may not come.45

A must read5 star

A book that people everywhere needs to have in the home.55
